Q.Need to know if there is such a type of Mourning Jewelry in this period called Gottapercha (not sure of spelling)/Irish Bog. I am contemplating a purchase and this was the name/type the seller gave me. Also, any additional information that can lead me to a reference on this type of jewelry would be appreciated.
A.In addition to mourning jewelry mentioned, there are also mourning rings and mourning spoons. The spoons and rings were often given to the pall bearers. Irish bog refers to Bog Oak, hardened logs of wood that are preserved for years in various bogs (marshes), (not just Irish). When recovered and worked, the wood is incredibly hard and black. Although small pieces are used in jewellery, I have seen tables made from planks of bog oak and they are stunning!!
