Wholesale Fashion Accessory JewelryQ.Does anyone know why gold jewelry appears to be so overpriced? I've been looking for a 14 ga 3/8" CBR with a gold bead, and can't find anything cheaper than $50 US (and that's 14 karat!), which seems way out of line to me. Based on the total volume of the piece, the density of gold, and a generous market price of $300 per troy ounce, I figure the amount of gold in the ring plus bead to be worth less than $18 for an 18 kt piece, and less than $14 for 14 kt. Is it that these pieces are infrequently made? I can't imagine that gold is harder to work with than 316 or Ti. Maybe it's that gold is too easily stolen? A.OK, let's do the math then. Let's say $14 for the amount of gold in the ring. Let's add to that some material is lost in the manufacturing process, bringing the cost to $16. Let's say that the cost to manufacture is $1, bringing the total manufacturing cost to $17. Let's say that makes the wholesale cost somewhere between $22 and $30. Double that to get retail cost. $50 doesn't seem too bad if it's quality jewelry. That's nothing, with most "normal" jewellery, the mark-up is sometimes in excess of 400%. With clothing and fashion accessories, most places multiply wholesale by 3 (at least). Actually, on reflection, I see Shannon's point. Retailers have to keep a fair amount of capital tied up in stock in jewelery, due to the wide range of style and size. A 100% markup isn't too far out of line. Somehow, my mind got focussed on the idea that the difference in price between rings in 316 and gold should be about the same as the difference in raw material cost. Completely neglecting the concept of markup. Silly me. I'd hope, though, that lost material accounts for a lot less than $2 a piece. I'd think it would be reasonably easy to be more careful than that.
