Titanium Belly Button Ring, What can I do about my navel ring?

Q.Every now and then, I'll somehow manage to reinjure it (catch it on pants, someone hugs me and picks me up, cat, etc.). In each case, I feel a sharp pain (rip?), the thing starts bleeding (always from the inside of the navel, not the top), a couple of times it became really infected- looking... After once such time I went to a doctor. She said it looked really irritated but was nothing to be too worried about. She gave me some ointment and told me to keep it clean. Each time the irritation goes away in a few days, but the discoloration never goes completely away. I went to a piercer recently, and she told me it definitely shouldn't take this long to heal, and to use hot compresses and tea tree oil on it. No improvement. (Again, except when I reinjure it, the main problem is the discoloration. It's not leaking, not sore, no hard spots, etc. I don't want to sound like a walking infection here!) So, my first question is how do I get this thing to heal? I have multiple piercings in my ears, and I never had this kind of problem. (I know the navel is completely different, but 3 years?!) I've tried salt water, tried cleaning it religiously, tried NOT cleaning it religiously, I wear loose clothing, have barely been in a pool in 3 years, it'll just never completely heal. Going by the desc. in the FAQs I've read, it SEEMS to be the right size and I SEEM to be doing everything right... Second, if and when it ever does heal, will it always be this sensitive? I've caught my ear hoops REALLY hard on things before, sometimes feeling like I've surely ripped them out, and they don't even get red. The times I've re-injured this thing haven't even been BAD tugs... (Except for the cat... Don't ask...)

A.besides that, she could also have a problem with steel. perhaps switching to a similar ring of titanium would solve the problem. I've been reading the responses with interest! I now understand that if I switch to a titanium barbell and then join SETI the voices will contact me and I will be healed! I think... I didn't even know that they made jewelry from titanium. (Mountain bikes, yes...) A friend mentioned US export restrictions on titanium. Does that mean I'd have to surrender my body jewelry at the border?
