HOW TO START (JEWELRY-MAKING)?
Q.I would like to pursue a career in jewelry-making, and would like to eventually work as a silver/goldsmith but am not certain even where to begin. Could someone give me some advice as to where to start looking for information on education in this area? Or maybe someone good to contact?
A.First thing to do is to look and see if your local vocational tech school has a jewelry and metalsmithing program. Then check out apprenticeship programs in your area. There are a number of good colleges that also offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in jewelry and metalsmithing. Ask at your local jewelers if anyone is looking for an apprentice. Or you can do like a lot of the rest of us, Buy books, videos, talk to people in rock shops, jewelry stores, go to fairs, art and craft shows. You may wind up working at something else to pay the bills but if you want to create jewelry then you will. If you are younger look for work in the jewelry field and let it be known that you want to learn to do bench work.
