Q.How can I best clean a diamond solitaire (mounted in a 14k setting) ?
A.The main objective in any diamond/gold cleaning process is to cut grease. Diamonds have an affinity (will attract) grease, including skin oils and food residues. Then the grease, in turn, holds dirt. While you're working with the piece, be alert to loose stones, thinning prongs, etc. that may indicate some repair work is in order. By the way, one of the best ways to check for loose stones is to gently shake the piece while holding it right next to your ear. Often you will be able to hear it "banging around" before you can see it move. Overly dirty pieces can make loose stones appear tight by having gunk wedged between the stone and the setting; so clean the piece first, then check for looseness. And don't let any of the cleaning solution or rinse water go down the drain until you're sure that all of the stones are still in the piece. (This paragraph applies to colored stone jewelry as well.)
