loose stone on engagement ring (vent - long).Q.I'm also wondering how it could become loose like this in less than 2 months. Don't they check them before they sell them? A.first, channel settings are less secure than prong settings. I'm really not surprised that you have a loose stone. Any bump that knocks the ring even slightly out of round could loosen a channel set. Second, you _should_ have your diamonds cleaned and checked (ie, are the prongs loose, or whatever) twice a year. This is generally called 'refurbishing" and many jewelers offer it as an ongoing service. I work for a department store with a fine jewelry department and, if the customer brings the ring in to be refurbished every six months, their ring is guaranteed by the company...we'll replace stones free of charge if you lose them, or whatever. Without your doing this, it's not. You may want to check with your jeweler to see they had recommended this to your fiancee when he bought the ring. Last, if you are nervous about your ring, you can usually obtain a diamond certificate for it. These are issued for diamonds of a certain quality that would be likely to be switched (I'm not sure the letter grade, though) and is essentially a map of your diamond. A sketch shows the cut, while marks on the sketch show the inclusions your stone has which make it unique. Your fiancee may have received one when he purchased the ring. You might want to get your ring appraised by a gemologist if he didn't.
