Ring Tiffany Titanium, Invisible (Ring) Setting of My Dreams ?Q.I have a ring with a similar invisible setting which looks great but functions horribly. The ring would catch on things and pop out the stone. (I kept catching it on my desk drawer and slide out computer keyboard.) I was fixing the ring all of the time. I don't wear it anymore. I need to find a new setting for it. I would be wary. A.I was worried about that very problem and would weep if I lost this stone. Any recs for a setting that really lets the light shine through but is not a Tiffany-type prong setting? I love the settings at http://www.titaniumweddingringsandbands.com/titaniumweddingrings5.htm but I don't know how secure they actually are. In theory, titanium's tensile strength is much higher than gold or silver, so you shouldn't have the same issue of bending the setting and thus popping out the gem. I vaguely recall a couple a.fers saying that they were very happy with their titanium rings (may or may not have been from this retailer -- it may have been http://www.titanium-rings.com/indexns.html). You may want to try googling for the thread. Since the ultimate tensile strength of titanium is so high (~550 MPa), just keep in mind that your finger will give before your ring does if you catch the ring on something. Bone has an ultimated tensile strength of ~130 MPa, similar to gold alloys, so there's still a chance of injury even with a gold ring. Titanium rings can be cut off at the hospital, contrary to popular belief. What about a four-prong setting instead of the Tiffany six? I have four prongs and there's definitly a lot of light that shines through. I get many compliments on it and even though it is a good quality diamond, I think it's the setting makes it look of higher quality than it is. HTH I have a Steven Kretchmer tension ring. If you get the patented Kretchmer ring, then it's impossible for the stone to pop out. I've had it for about 9 years now and wear it every day since it's my engagement ring. The only problem is that the larger the stone is, the bulkier the ring gets. It's just about perfect for my small diamond. I still love my ring because even though all my friends got larger stones, my ring is unique and symbolizes our life (financial situation) at the time.
