pearl necklace question
Q.A friend wants to get a strand of pearls for their daughter's graduation, we were discussing different aspects of pearls. Size, quality, color etc. For a classic, keep forever strand of pearls what do you recommend? Is one size better than others? They say they'll spend up to 5K (I want parents like that - sigh I got a pen set) so I know that will buy something wonderful.
A.I think it's ridiculous to get $5000 worth of natural pearls for a young woman, because a) a $500-$600 high-quality cultured pearl strand will be just as attractive and more appropriate for a young woman; b) caring for natural pearls is time-consuming and difficult, and it's hard to imagine a 23-year-old having the time or desire to do so; c) it's unlikely she'd be able to get insurance on them if she's just going to keep them in a jewelry box in her apartment; d) where is she going to wear them that they won't be ostentatious? I've never seen anyone under 50 wearing $5000 worth of pearls anywhere except the Oscars. Now, of course there are places that will charge you $5K for a strand of pearls worth $500-$700; Tiffany's, for example. They have a nice clasp, but it's not $4,300 worth of nice. I think that a pretty string of pearls AND some diamond studs set in platinum (or gold) would be a better range of "investment" jewelry for a young woman.
