Q.Where have people been buying their wedding jewelry? I don't mean rings--we've already ordered ours and splurged on something nice, since they're one of the few things from the wedding day we'll keep, other than each other. I'm thinking about necklaces, earrings, and the like. I'm tempted to get something really cheap and simple for a wedding necklace. A couple weeks ago I was in a mall accessories store looking for hair clips, and I saw some necklaces of faux pearls, rhinestones, and the like that looked fine to me. But I'm no expert. Will people be able to tell cheap accessory-store fake pearls from expensive department store ones?
A.Most people probably can't tell the difference, period. Those who do, look for how the pearls fall. Cheaply-strung pearls are strung without knots between the beads, so the beads rub against each other, and the necklace may not sit along your neck in a graceful arc. When you buy your pearls, look at how they're strung: if you see tiny knots between each pearl, it can "pass" for a more expensive necklace. This is hard to find even at department stores, btw -- my best luck has been at Sears, where I found a short pearl necklace for just $10 a few years ago.
