Q.There was a scandal about 10 years ago. It seems radioactive gold was sold as scrap. Some found its way into the jewelry trade. I believe the gold was used as shielding in a reactor ??? Any futher information for me???
A.One could use gold as a shielding material for a reactor but Lead is much more cost effective. Gold is more likely to have been used in detectors and connectors than as 'real' shielding. Heavy elements like Lead are used to stop gamma radiation. Light elements like water or polyethelene are used to stop neutrons. Several years ago, a supplier was delivering re-bar to the Los Cruces military base. On entering the main gate, the Geiger counter went berserk. On inspection it wasd found that it had been made in Mexxico using all sorts of scrap. In the scrap used were the remains of medical equipment that had been bought in the U.S. that had been sold to dealers in Mexico with the radoactive components still in the equip. Several children in Juarez were foun to be suffering from radiation poisoning. One died. No one was found to be liable. It sometimes pays to make sure what you are buying. I live not to far from Las Cruces and Los Alamos. Good buys on gold sold by the gov. are not always safe.
