Man Diamond Bracelet Watch

Q.Just spend the evening reading through a number of threads on this NG, and have a few questions, beginning with that of the subject line. It had been my understanding (I had been given to understand, that is...) that a Rolex watch cost so much because it had a lifetime warranty that included free servicing and repair, though with what limits were never clear. I do recall a couple of times in different towns being in a jewelry shop and watching someone retrieve a repaired/serviced Rolex, and no mention of a bill or charge was made. On these occasions I was informed that Rolex included all these charges in the price of the purchase. Reading here informs me otherwise, I gather? A google yields little from Rolex (a model in a clingy dress on an iceberg?!?) on this matter. What is the reality here, please? I gather that this is a bit better than the averages cited here? Also: I'd be interested in reading opinions about which marques are the best and why, if anyone cares to post. Is Patek Phillipe the best out there? If not, which one is?

A.The exception to this is that after it's had a service, and you have paid through the nose, they will often work on the watch for free if it has to go back 12-18months after the service, which in my case was not infrequent. The guarantee period after a service includes free regulation of a chronometer if it goes out of spec within that period. You probably saw people collecting their Rolex within the guarantee period after a service, after it had gone wrong again. Like in my case, never staying in time spec, and the rotor arm falling off twice! At least this was the case in the UK for me. You are looking at a high maintenance watch and spending lots of $$. Rolex is a lot cleverer than that. In one issue of Opera News (mailed to Metropolitan Opera subscribers) there is a full cover page photo of the "Cellissima" with diamond studded bezel. In another, within the front cover, a full page photo of Yo Yo Ma, along side a Rolex adv., "His Cello Can Sing" with a picture of a yellow gold Oyster Perpetual Day-Date. Whatever the mechanics of their timepieces, they pride themselves as appearing as a classy act- and choose appropriate Ad People. Wearing a Rolex makes you classy, even if it is a fake. However if a fake is worn to the Opera it is yet another advertisement for them, even though the person wearing is a putz.
