Loose Mine Cut Diamonds
Q.When were these diamonds cut or when were they fashionable? What is the current value of these diamonds? What is the usual grade and Size? Where can one purchase these stones/set pieces Please give any information.
A.most of what we call "mine cuts" were cut from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. it had less to do with fashion and more to do with the taste and the skill of the diamond cutters and their suppliers. generally the value of mine cuts is at a discount to their sister modern cut stones, because some people consider them inferior(i on the other had like them more than modern cuts and actively collect and stock them). these stones generally carry a lot of history. they generally are from brazil or southern africa and are part of modern diamond lore. sizes range to whatever you can think of, although most larger sizes(over two carats) have been recut and although they gained a lot of brillance they have lost their precious and irreplacable history. grades are generally in the si-clarity range with all sorts of colors,but generally h-k. clarity also ranges from flawless to imperfect. they generally are found set in all sorts of turn of the century jewelry,but once in a while are available loose for various reasons. we happen to stock both loose and mounted. another very interesting cut is the "rose cut", but that for another time.
