Loose Diamonds Princess Cut

Q.I'm looking for a 1 carat emerald or princess cut... whats more important? ... clarity or color? i'm looking in the VVS1 range with a H color or better.... in and emerald cut, clarity is more important. Fewer facets mean smaller inclusions will be more visible than a stone with more facets to camoflouge them. With H or better color, you can mask any yellowness with the setting. More yellow stones will look "whiter" in a yellow gold setting. Emerald cuts are somewhat hard to find in stores - if you're working with a jeweler, call ahead to make sure they have some stones to choose from. They're less traditional and we were told we don't really want that cut - guess who we didn't buy from . They don't throw as much sparkle as a princess cut, but I like the clean look.

A.Definatly go for the color. I have a 1 carat princess cut VS2 with a G color. (And it is just beautiful!) I don't know where you live but if you live in California like I do, I would really recommend shopping at the LA "diamond district". That's where we bought my ring and we paid only $2,500 for the loose stone. If you don't live in CA perhaps there is a "Jewelry Mart" near you? Maybe you didn't really want this info but I just hate to see someone pay retail prices! We were quoted $8,000 for a lesser stone at several retail jewelry stores. The most important factor when buying a diamond is the "make" or the cut, proportioning and finish of the stone. Without great make, it won't matter what color the diamond is--or how free it is from flaws--and the experts agree. TIFFANY'S in its "How To Buy a Diamond" brochure, says that the cut is the most important factor when evaluating a diamond for beauty and brilliance. Jay Feder, author, "A Practical Guide To Buying Diamonds" says, "It is not uncommon for a diamond merchant to push color and clarity and disregard the quality of the cut. This sometimes results in the purchase of a diamond that is really worth, 20, 30, or 40 percent less than what the merchant is charging you, just because of the poor cut." So study up on those diamonds--it will be well worth your while!
