Jewelry Questions

Jewelry Making Instructions

Q.I've really been interested in making some beaded jewelry, but so far they have just been simple, just beads strung onto some tigertail. I want to learn how to make those headpieces like the ones in Victorian Charm (I think that's what it's called) or at least some more ornate chokers. Does anyone have any ideas, or instructions?

A.Find your local bead store, most larger cities will have one, though the quality of the store can vary greatly. They'll most likely have a dozen or two books on beading, some will have classes (if I remember correctly, my local one had a class for a victorian something or other). They will also have a *much* larger selection of beads than a craft store. An example. My local craft store has a display of size 11 seed beads (the "standard" size, if you can call it that, just the most commonly used) that's about three feet by five feet. My local bead store has an entire wall, and while not all their beads are flat against the wall, the measurements would probably be four feet high by, oh, twenty feet wide. And that's JUST the standard size of beads. In the center they have all sorts of other beads (semi-precious/precious stones, charms, etc). Plus, ya know those tiny little squares that beads are sold in at the craft store for like, $3-$5? For the same price at a bead store, you can get about four or five times as many beads. Plus your bead store will have nifty bead-related things that a craft store won't have, for example, my bead store sells silver and gold-toned change purse clasps. They cme with little holes to string the first row of beads through, and then ya do the rest, I'm going to make oen that starts out silver and fades to a topaz blue. It looks gorgeous now because the silver beads I bought ($3.25 for enough to finish the entire purse) almost exactly match the silver of the clasp.
