Indian Jewelry For Man
Q.one of my relatives mentioned to me that it is extremely difficult to have a thali made in the united states - the shops are typically interested in selling rings only which is very surprising to me. Where I live in northern california there are a great many shops for Indian jewelry and yet it is quite true they seem rarely to even know what a "thali" is unless they happen to be from the south. If the thali disappears from our community for lack of awareness that would be really quite sad. Of all our symbols that identify the south indian community I find the Thali is the one that should endure, and yet it may well disappear - any opinions?
A.though thali is prevalent in south indian commmunity in India it has no more the sanctity it once had. there is no more "thali sentiment" except in films and Tamil TV serials. Formerly the women never used to remove thali and even if absolutely necessary for pawning they replace it with "manjal" thread. Nowadays the women do not mind removing the thali for taking oil bath or shampoo as it is irksome for washing. some people feel that thali is male chauvnistic symbol. If thali represents a married woman what symbolises a married man. every morning the women used to put thali to their eyes and pray for the long life of the husband . does the husband do anything like this for the long life of the wife. This does not mean everyone should agree with these views. If one has these sentimens whether a man or woman he/she has a right. If thali is not available for expatriates in USA use a "manjal" thread that is much more auspicious and symbol of tamil culture than the gold ornament thali which perhaps was a later addtion.
