Hip Hop Man Jewelry

Q.We all know Eric B wouldn't win. You've got some big moneymakers who may sway the voters with lots of ads, like Master P. Then, you've got grassroots campaigners like The Coup, who can't afford the big ads at all. Who could lead our wild disjointed hip-hop nation?

A.I've always thought that any type of hip-hop based movement would be more in the socialist vein too. But thinking about this thread, I wondered if it's really true. If anything hip-hop's history and evolution point towards a more market based outlook. With a few notable exceptions most artists appear to be in favor of capitalism and unrestrained consumption. Hip-hop success is based on the individual entrepeneur succeeding without any subsidizing by the government. From the beginning of hip-hop, to Wu-Tang selling Protect Ya Neck out of their car, to Master P's success, as well as Too Short, and even today's small independent label is what capitialism is all about. Certain staples of hip-hop, the freestyle battle, the DJ battles, and the flaunting of wealth are all evidence that hip-hop for the most part, rejects a socialist ethos of state support, and the equality of all and favors the creedo of get ahead by any means. To some degree you see it in this ng, any time some neophyte ventures in and proclaims their love for the latest flavor of the month, they are attacked or ignored. There is very little attempt to understand that person or enjoy the differences in taste. Instead, the "cultural elite" of hip-hop's ng jump all over that person. As if music and culture are some type of objective science. In the political realm I could see the same thing happening, espcially with hip-hop's penchant for discarding those who make it too big. If some hip-hopper turned politician started to gain real power, he/she would be dismissed as a sell-out, as though no one in hip-hop buys into the system every time they buy three new cars and $5000 worth of jewelry.
