High Fashion JewelryQ.I have a wonderful anniversary band (ten diamonds, ten years) that has recently started making my finger swell up and turn red. I presume there is something growing on the underside of the band that I'm reacting to. Is there something inexpensive and/or homemade that I could clean the ring with that won't hurt the gold or the diamonds (or my finger)? A.Don't use the ammonia and water mix on your rings! Use a mild soap like Woolite or Dawn with water. About a 1:1 mix. GENTLY brush with an old soft toothbrush or cotton ball. Rinse well. Dry. Do this about once a week. isn't "high fashion jewelry" essentially upscale costume jewelry? I don't think I'd use ammonia on fashion/costume jewelry, either, but on carat gold, most gemstones, and certainly diamonds the old ammonia and water stand-by does great work. My own jeweler recommended it to me 30 years ago (and also warned me NOT to use it on pearls, jade, and opals), and I've never had a bit of damage to anything.
