Jewelry Questions

Fine Jeweler Jewelry ?

Q.I've got a couple of rings my wife gave me that need some work; apparently I'm hard on them for some reason. These are the rings: http://www.franklinmint.com/product1.aspx?SID=2&Product_ID=7831 http://www.franklinmint.com/product1.aspx?SID=2&Product_ID=7827 The celtic cross ring needs probably the least work, as it has a thicker band, but both of them are out of round -- the celtic ring is flattened slightly, and the dragon ring is _severely_ flattened, to the point that I can only remove it if I have it in the right position. Simply re-rounding them won't solve the problem (I've managed to do so with the dragon ring twice, and I'm afraid to do it again for fear of metal fatigue); they need to be re-rounded and reinforced. In addition, it would be nice if the celtic ring were to be about a quarter-size smaller, and/or roughened on the inside (while the polished inside _looks_ nice, it's essentially frictionless, which means it tends to rotate freely (making typing difficult), and I've nearly lost it twice when it slipped off my wet finger. I don't know how to find a jeweler who could do this work, although I doubt that your typical mall jewelry store would be able to. What should I look for?

A.Actually, the "typical mall jewelry store" likely *would* be able to. Mainly because they usually don't do their own work. They usually farm it out to professionals. You have to give very explicit instructions though, as to what you want done, because of this second-hand approach. However, remembering how much it cost my wife to have my favorite rather heavy gold-plated ring recast in gold when the plating of the original wore off ... most of it labor, not gold, as you might expect ... The cost will likely be a bit pricey. If you can find a mall jewelry store (rare these days) where they have an actual genuine jeweler *in the store* (most don't these days); sometimes you can dicker to get a good price on specialty jobs like that.
