Eagan Exchange Jewelry Mn ?Q.Jewelry stores will take jewelry at the full retail price in exchange for other jewelry. I think coin dealers should be required to do the same with coins. A.You're a bit confused about the jewelry biz. A retail jewelry store is normally selling merchandise at anywhere from 80% to 300% markup!! (Other than in certain areas such as loose diamonds where they must be a bit more competitive) The stores that will "take jewelry at full retail price" you refer to, would NEVER take items from any other store at "full retail price". They'll take their OWN item back that they sold to you, (in perfect condition with receipt of course) in exchange for a HIGHER priced item of equally bloated, 80% or higher markup. T hus they extend their profit margin on the "trade" without losing a thing. I visit the major jewelry show at San Mateo twice a year. Believe me, the Jewelry stores are doing you no favors with their "50% off" sales, and "we'll exchange at full price" policies. But again, this is one of the ironies for a coin dealer. Buyer's consider a 20% spread on a collectible coin to be grossly excessive. They'll moan and goran at length on the huge "spread". Yet they think nothing of plunking down $300.00 for that Amethyst pendant necklace for their wife's birtday gift, which cost the jeweler $60.00 to purchase wholesale (a 500% spread!!!)
