Jewelry Questions

Diamond Key Pendant.

Q.We have decided on a ruby rather than the traditional diamond. How can I, a truly inexperienced gem shopper have any way of knowing if a ruby is a good one? I know what cut styles I like and that I want one that is a deep color but how much should I expect to pay for a decent quality ruby? Are they measured in carats like diamonds? In other words, if a jeweler offers me a ruby of a particular carat weight (if that is how it is done) for say $150, is there any way I can get a sense of whether that is a reasonable price or if it must be a low quality stone?

A.Next best bet would be to do some research in the library yourself and go into jewelry stores armed with knowledge about the purchase. This is key. My boyfriend (I went with him) bought a star saphire pendant. It was beautiful. We asked the salewoman if it was genuine or manufactured. She said genuine and when we asked how to tell, she said, they are trained. Being very naive, we bought it. We continued looking in other stores. My boyfriend brought the pendant with him to one jeweler where he purchased my pre-engagement ring. The jeweler there laughed when we asked him to check on the quality of the star saphire. He showed us 'real' star saphires. Boy were we embarrassed. There was a big difference. We took the 'fake' back and it just so happened the woman who waited on us was there. I told her off, making sure her manager knew very well we would never return there to shop
