Jewelry Questions

Diamond Jewelry Manufacturer

Q.I am looking to buy an engagement ring for my girlfriend some time over the next few months. Since I have time, I figured I would educate myself on exactly what the "4 C's" really do mean and where exactly I should buy a diamond. Can anybody please comment on the pros and cons of buying an engagement ring at one of the following places: 1) A jewelry store at the mall 2) A large department store like Dillard's or Macy's 3) A catalog showroom like Service Merchandise 4) Local jewelry store somewhere in the suburbs 5) Local jewelry store somewhere downtown in the city 6) From a wholesaler (what does this mean exactly?) 7) From one of the place on the Internet (Which companies on the Internet are good and which are bad?) What type of guarantee does someone on the Internet give? How is the diamond shipped (box, Fedex, etc.)? What type of return policy do these places on the Internet offer? How does the quality of a diamond from somewhere on the Internet compare to somewhere else like a dept. store or from a store at the mall? If I buy a diamond on the Internet, does that mean I have to buy the band elsewhere?

A.There are three (3) levels/grades of jewelry quality: 1) Low-level/quality: may be found in places such as catalog showroom stores and member warehouse stores. 2) Medium-level/quality: may be found in mall-jewelry stores, and other mall-like stores that also sell other things like ... clothes and furniture. 3) High-level/quality: found in most privately owned jewelry stores ... the ones you find on a corner somewhere who tend to avoid the mass-produced crap found from overseas. As far as wholesalers can be described: a manufacturer produces the product, then either acts as a wholesaler and sells to the stores, or sells to another wholesaler who in turn sells to the stores as a middle-man. I am a wholesale diamond and jewelry broker, who is contracted by a full-scale diamond and jewelry manufacturer to distribute their diamonds, gemstones, and products to stores and insurance companies for replacements on homeowner's policy losses. In addition to diamonds, we also supply all other forms of jewelry. Some of the accounts I sell to claim to be wholesalers, when in fact they are merely low-retailers who have less of a markup on their inventory than most other retailers. Fact is, a TRUE wholesaler cannot advertise to the public and sell to the public at wholesale prices without 1) losing their clientele, and 2) being sued by their competition for practicing unfair business activities. As a wholesaler, we ARE allowed, however, to sell privately to persons we know or are referred into us. We will not however, place advertisements or take a client away from one of our stores. Shipment of diamonds are dealt with on an individual basis, and the specifics are not disclosed in public. Basically, it is disclosed on a "need to know" basis. Most of the diamonds we sell are certified stones. The four C's are (actually there are Five): Cut, Clarity, Color, Carat Weight, and Cost. Cut is perhaps the most important, because everything else about the stone is affected by its cut. A properly cut diamond is proportionate and even-flowing in its design ... it has a centered table and culet, its girdle is rhythmic and evenly spaced, and its facets are proportionate to each other. Who is good vs. who is bad? I could get sued for answering that question specifically, so I will leave it at this ... go with the person who fully-discloses everything about the diamond and whom you feel the best about ... trust your gut. MOST jewelers (4 out of 5 on an anonymous survey) will NOT disclose the fact that they sell "clarity-enhanced" stones. Many people do not even know about such a thing, but since about 1980, a treatment involving a laser and diamond-like filler has been used to make many lower quality diamonds LOOK like better quality. I don't know about you, but I would be PISSED if someone sold me a clarity enhanced diamond without telling me ... This is not to say there is anything wrong with a clarity enhanced diamond, unless the buyer does not know. Most of the diamonds we provide are NOT clarity enhanced, although they are available upon the customer's request. The diamonds we supply range from the Tolkowsky and Eight Star cuts, to the standard common market cuts. The tolkowsky and Eight Star are by far the finest cut and proportioned diamonds in the world. And are as close to mathematic precision and perfect cut as one can hope to find. To perhaps best answer any remaining curiosities, I would personally suggest visiting our webpage at: http://www.niceice.com .... where we're always Ice at a Nice Price (TM) (c)
