Frugal wedding rings?

Q.Thinking of getting married for first time. Any ideas on how to keep the cost of wedding rings down? Is buying online from Zales say cheaper than buying in a store?

A.Try a gem wholesaler and buy a stone from them. I got 2 wedding rings and an engagement ring for the independently appraised price of the stone alone. Ask for stones that come from other places besides S. Africa (avoiding DeBeers cartel). But please, don't buy stones from Sierra Leone. (political reasons, not frugal ones) I'd say it depends on what you're thinking about buying. You can get inexpensive plain 10K weddings bands for as little as $20. If you want a good diamond, then I'd try and educate myself on the quality of stones. When we shopped my husband learned how to use a jeweler's loop and checked the stone himself for quality. As far as finding a reputable jeweler, we used word of mouth and had friends recommend one they were pleased with both price and quality. I wouldn't buy a ring online unless you knew the reputation of exactly who you were dealing with. I'd also want to see the ring beforehand.
