Claddagh ring explaination please?
Q.Could some explain the whole thing about the Claddagh ring that Angel gave to Buffy? Like what it means and the significance of the dirrection you wear it?
A.My family is irsh so practically ALL of us own one. It's an irish friendship ring that is also uses for lovers and married folk. It all depends on what finger its worn and where the point of the heart is pointed at (towards the knuckle or the nail) Here's the "rules" on the right finger pointed out (nail)=friendship, right finger pointing in (knuckle) means love or girlfriend/boyfriend. On the left finger pointing out is engagment and left pointing in is a wedding ring. The hands represent friendship, the hear represents love and the crown is loyalty. James Avery here in Texas sells silver rings for $30 and gold ones for $125. I lost my ring 3 months ago. Too bad the true story behind the claddagh isn't so pretty. I don't remember it, but a person on the wedding newsgroups likes to warn people about it. Step over there, and you will get the actual story of the claddagh that began the tradition long before the pretty one we currently hear. Who cares how the claddagh ring first started or what it meant. All that matters now is what people think now. As an Irish person, with a lot of Irish friends some of whom actually use the claddagh as there actual wedding ring, I choose to think of them in the way they have been thought of for years, as an Irish wedding ring. You know the swastika was once a Wiccan symbol of peace, but now its a symbol of hatred and racism and war. I accept that I cannot use the swastika the way it was supposed to be used because history has changed the meaning. We evolve and so do the symbols we use, should we live in the past or the present?
