Child-unfriendly hobbies was Regarding Needlework .Q.I love collecting costume jewelry, especially earrings. My problem is I really don't know much about the trade, I only pick out what I like. Although I don't know, I suspect I have one or two pairs of earrings which may be of some limited value due to the quality of the work, a name stamp on the back or whatever, but again I'm clueless and would feel uncomfortable taking my old costume jewelry to someone I don't know for appraisal. Can you recommend a good book which could give a novice collector like myself some idea of what to look for, the history/background on designers, price/value? A.I am not an only child, but I am the only one of my siblings who is a 'reader'. My parents both read to some extent (Mom likes mysteries, Dad subscribes to about a thousand magazines), but are not big-time readers. I'm not sure what made me love reading while my sibs are neutral. We're all about equally intelligent (in fact, my brother who is probably the smartest of the lot HATES to read, and would pick books for book reports in grade school by the number of pages...). I think we all learned to read fairly early. I guess it's just a personality thing. they do this thing that makes me crazy. To encourage students to read for pleasaure, they had a special reading program where, if the child read 5 books each month, she got a coupon for a free pizza. If she completed the whole program, she got a medal. Almost overnight I watched Shaina change from "I can read this all by myself. Way cool!" to "I only have to read 2 more books this month and I can get my pizza." (And then when the quota was done, it was hard to get her to tackle a new book, though she'd still happily re-read the old ones.) I don't know how well the program works for the non-readers, but it sure served to change our litle reader into a little mercenary. (Fortunatley the program is over, she has her medal, and she's back to reading for fun.)
