Bridal Jewelry Sterling SilverQ.My fiance and I are getting married this September, and are about to embark on the hunt for wedding rings. Neither of us like the look of gold bands, but rather prefer silver. We've heard that platinum can be quite expensive, so my question is this: Is it acceptable to have wedding bands made of sterling silver, or is this a no-no? We're on a tight budget and with sterling silver, the price is right. Can anyone offer up any other options/suggestions on this matter? My hubby-to-be isn't much of a jewelry person as it is, so it's important we find something we both like (because he will NOT be taking THIS piece of jewelry off and tossing it in a box, THAT'S for sure A.How about white gold? I have found that these pieces are traditionally about the same price as yellow gold bands, etc. and are nice if you are looking for something to coordinate with silver jewelry. I happen to be a jewelry nut(sterling silver) and have had all my rings for a long time and haven't had any problems with them wearing well. Yes, I do wear my rings everyday...just like a wedding ring. Look at a gold wedding ring a few years after the wedding, and it's bound to have some scratches, too. Fine jewelry will have to be taken care of no matter what it's made of. It's up to you what you choose. If you are considering bands in white gold or silver, here's a jewelry catalogue that might help you. It's Walker Metalsmiths, 1-800-488-3835. They do primarily Celtic designs, but quotes for rings in Sterling Silver are $35-$40 and white gold is $250-$350. Actually, I was hoping to get something similar. I am very fond of silver and as most of my jewlery is silver, I would like to tie in my engagement and wedding rings to my current collection. A few things while you're shopping.... 1) Good sterling silver is hard to find. Many jewlery stores don't even carry it. My fiance went looking for a birthday present a year or so ago for me and was surprised that he couldn't find *any* silver pieces at all. 2) Make sure that the piece is *solid* sterling silver. A lot of places only plate the jewlery and then as you wear it, the plating wears off or can be "eaten" off by jewlery cleaners (I found that out the hard way.) 3) Sterling silver can also be combined with other metals, such as yellow gold or rose gold. Again, watch out for plating. I don't know specifics about hardness or resistance to scratching as most of my pieces are not rings. The rings I do have, however, I am pleased with. I have one that I wore almost constantly for about a year and it has survived surprisingly well. About the only thing I have to do with it is dunk it in some cleaner every so often. I don't claim to be a jewelry expert, so all of the above is just what I've found in shopping for silver.
