Asscher Cut Diamond Loose

Q.all you Trivial Pursuit Wizzes. Who can give us some info on the Cullinan Diamond and who can tell us if there has been any other stones larger than this one found since, and any subsequent info about it?

A.In our museum we have models of the most famous diamonds in the world. The Cullinan diamond is one of them. We have a model of the uncut, rough diamond and models of the nine largest diamonds after cutting. When you are in Holland, you should come and visit the museum. Some background information on the Cullinan: It was found by Frederik Wells in the Premier Diamond Mine in South Africa in 1905. It was (and still is) the largest diamond ever found. It is called after Sir Thomas Cullinan, president and discoverer of the Premier Mine Company. The diamond had the size of a fist and weighed approximately 621 grams (3,106 ct). The Transvaal government bought the diamond for £150,000 and gave it to King Edward III of England on his 66th birthday (November 9, 1907). The diamond was send to Asscher in Amsterdam, where it was cut in 9 large stones, 96 smaller brilliants, and almost 10 ct of 'leftovers'. The total weight of the cut stones is 1,063 ct, leaving only 34.2% of the origional weight. The largest stone, The Star of Africa I (Cullinan I) weighs 530,2 ct and is the largest diamond in the world. It has the shape of a pear, and is part of the Royal Scepter. The Star of Africa II (Cullinan II, The Lesser Star of Africa) weighs 317,4 ct and is the second largest diamond. This diamond is almost round and is part of the Imperial State Crown. The nine largest diamonds are part of the British Crown Jewels, and are in posession of the British Royal House. Much information about famous diamonds can be found in: -National Geographic Magazine, December 1971. Questing for gems, by George S. Switzer. -A publication by De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited.
