Antique Jewelry Sell
Q.Can anyone advise what they've done to get some money back from old rings? I have 4 gold rings, 3 of them with tiny or small gems and diamonds. Two of the rings are a woman's wedding and engagement set, but the engagement ring has small, channel-set diamonds. One local jeweler I spoke to said he wouldn't even melt them down to make something new. Another jeweler who actually has a consigment business along with his new jewelry business says my best bet is to donate them to charity. He makes it sound like their resale value is something along the lines of pennies on the dollar of their new price and is very reluctant to consign them or even to melt them down for me. I understand I won't get my original purchase price out of them, but I am surprised to find that they're virtually worthless. One of them was purchased new for over $600. If there are no good options other than the charity idea, does anyone know charities that want jewelry? I would think this would be pretty worthless to them, if even I can't get them resold or melted down. Obviously diamonds aren't a good investment, unlike what the diamond industry tries to tell us...
A.I did a quick review of similar items on ebay and found that they were selling for under $10. Not worth the hassle of shipping them. I know pawning is a possibility but I've never pawned anything. What's the usual process with that? It's my understanding that they hold the item for some period of time in case you want to pay back the money and get the item back, or at the end of the period they sell the item. Is that right? Aren't pawnshops likely to give me prices similar to the ones I've found on ebay? I'm asking here because I was curious - with the high divorce rate in the U.S. I would think many people would have run into this. So I was curious what other people have done with old wedding rings and such
