Antique Jewelry Lot
Q.I have accumulated A LOT of jewelry over the years - I am trying to sell some items (some gold, silver pieces). I haven't really had a lot of luck with ebay since I don't have scanned photos of the jewelry (most are just simple gold chains, bracelets). I just need to CLEAN out a lot of items - any suggestions on where to sell some of this?
A.I looked into selling a watch that I don't wear, and the way it works at a Canadian chain of jewelry stores (Birks) is 1. they appraise the piece, and of course you have to pay for the appraisal 2. when the item sells, they take 60% and you get 40%! I checked at another jewelry shop that has consignment pieces in the window, and they split the proceeds with you, 50-50. I'm guessing that the piece is priced at a little more than half of the retail price when new; that means you'd get about a quarter of what you originally paid for it. In the end, I decided to just wear the watch more & enjoy it. If any pieces are unusual or vintage, you might try showing them to a company like Christie's or Sotheby's, which occasionally come to town. I know a woman who did that and a few of the pieces were chosen for auction and were shown in the catalogue. Maybe you could try Ebay for a couple of items and see how it goes. If getting scanned pictures is the diffculty, you could just take photos of the items (include a ruler in the photograph to indicate approximate size), and take the photo to a film processor, which can put a file on a disk for you. I've noticed this service at the drugstore where I take my film for processing. Let us know how it goes. I have jewelry that I don't wear - actually, I wear very little jewelry these days. I was thinking of restringing some necklaces - I prefer them longer than the ones I have - you might consider rejuvenating some of the necklaces this way.
